The Smith-Hammond Middleton memorial on the campus of South Carolina state University were created by Dr. Tolulope Filani as a monument and depiction of the faces for the individual during the Orangeburg massacre of 1968. Dr Filani's Response. Filani stated this after being asked how he knew if he was accurate creating the portraits. The Orangeburg Massacre of 1968 was a racial issue between police and college students at a bowling alley in Orangeburg South Carolina resulting in the murder or 3 students (Henry Smith, Samuel Hammond, and Delano Middleton).
